Percussion Concerto. 25 minutes.
Commissioned for the 60th anniversary of the Portland Chamber Orchestra and 100th anniversary of the Walla Walla Symphony Orchestra, Great River of the West is a percussion concerto tracing the flow of water from the snowfields of the Rockies along the Columbia to the sea. Written for and premiered by Mark Goodberger. In this excerpt, thousands of chinook salmon throw themselves at the great falls at Celilo, where for thousands of years a city of salmon fishers thrived until the the great dams drowned the river.
